Product details

Clai Sv.Jakov Malvazija is an outstanding example of Istrian winemaking art. This high-end Orange Wine, crafted from 42-year-old vines, presents itself in an intense, dark orange hue. Its complexity and depth are attributed to a three to four-week maceration period and spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, followed by careful aging in large wooden barrels.

On the palate, Sv.Jakov Malvazija unfolds an impressive range of flavors. Notes of ripe stone fruits, such as apricots and peaches, harmoniously blend with subtle citrus nuances and a hint of exotic spices. The texture is rich and almost oily, giving the wine exceptional fullness in the mouth. Despite its robust body and high alcohol content of 15%, the wine remains balanced and elegant. The natural acidity structure provides a refreshing freshness that rounds out the tasting experience. The long, lingering finish leaves a lasting impression and invites you to savor the wine at your leisure, exploring its complexity.

Recommended Enjoyment Moments with Clai Sv.Jakov Malvazija

Clai Sv.Jakov Malvazija is a versatile companion for upscale occasions. Its richness and complexity make it the ideal partner for fine fish dishes such as grilled salmon or tuna. It also brings out its flavor diversity excellently with hearty meat dishes like braised beef or lamb. Vegetarian dishes, especially those with intense spices, also pair exceptionally well with this wine. Served at a temperature of 12-14°C (54-57°F), Sv.Jakov Malvazija reveals its full aroma. A large wine glass allows you to fully appreciate the complex bouquet of this wine. Ideal for special evenings where the wine takes center stage, and time is taken to observe its development in the glass.

Clai Sv.Jakov Malvazija shows an impressive aging potential of at least 10 to 15 years. For optimal aging, it should be stored in a cool, dark place. Minimal sulfur addition and unfiltered bottling emphasize the natural character of this wine. Decanting before enjoying it helps unlock the wine's full potential and remove any sediments.

Clai: Where Istria's Heart Touches Wine

The Clai winery, nestled in the heart of Istria, is a true gem of sustainable winemaking. Under the guidance of Giorgio Clai, a winemaker with vision and passion, the winery has become synonymous with quality and authenticity. With 10 hectares of vineyards and 5 hectares of olive groves situated in the picturesque landscape around the village of Krasica, south of Buje, the vines and olive trees thrive in ideal conditions.

The proximity to the Adriatic Sea and an elevation of about 200 meters create a perfect microclimate where grapes can express their full flavor. Clai's terroir features calcareous flysch soil known for its low fertility and good drainage. These conditions naturally stress the vines, leading to the production of high-quality grapes.

Giorgio Clai and his team prioritize organic farming, completely avoiding systemic treatments like herbicides, insecticides, or fungicides. Fertilization is done sparingly and exclusively with organic materials. Winemaking at Clai follows a natural approach. Grapes spontaneously ferment on their skins without the addition of enzymes, selected yeasts, or lactic acid bacteria. The wines mature in wooden barrels of various sizes and spend a long time on the lees, which imparts complexity and depth. After nearly two years of aging, the wines are bottled without micro- or sterile filtration to preserve their natural purity and terroir character. Giorgio Clai considers each vintage unique, believing that there are no "good" or "bad" vintages when working in harmony with nature.
