The Welschriesling has an aroma of citrus fruits, gooseberries, and yellow apples. On the palate, one can perceive honeydew melon and pear. It is very easy to drink and uncomplicated. Despite its relatively high alcohol content of 14%, you don't notice it. The Welschriesling has a nice length in the finish. The price-performance ratio of this wine is exceptionally good! Carefully harvested with a lot of hard work and selection throughout the year, fully ripe grapes are harvested in autumn, cold macerated for 12 hours, and then fermented for 6 months in stainless steel tanks. The wine is made with as little intervention as possible to keep it as natural as possible. No sulfites or any additives were used throughout the year, instead, active batonnage is carried out. After malolactic fermentation and some aging, the wine is bottled unfiltered with a minimal amount of sulfites. |

The Cultus Welschriesling pairs well with light Mediterranean dishes, potato dishes, roasted vegetables, pumpkin soup, pasta dishes, as well as fish and seafood dishes. The ideal serving temperature is around 14 - 15°C, as this is when this wine reaches its full potential. Use large wine glasses if possible (e.g. Zalto Universal), as this enhances the drinking experience. The Welschriesling is the perfect choice for special occasions or an elegant dinner. The optimal storage of Cultus Welschriesling is in a cool, dark place, preferably in a wine cellar. With consistent temperature and suitable humidity, the wine can develop its flavor profile over the years. Once opened, the wine should be consumed within a few days. Decanting before serving can further enhance the tasting experience. |
A historic small winery with ecological values: The Cultus Winery |
The organic farm of Cultus is surrounded by a stone wall of the small village of Podraga in Primorska. The village, located at the beginning of the Vipava Valley, is a historic wine village mentioned by Johann Weikhard von Valvasor (a Slovenian polymath & topographer). It is difficult to determine how far back the art of winemaking on the current estate goes. Considering the earliest recorded date, its beginning can be traced back to the year 1683. Matej has been a farmer since childhood. Once a traditional mixed farm, today it is his key to producing and living with organic wine. Starting in 2023, the vineyards will have an organic certification with the European organic label. This certification ensures that the grapes used in wine production are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, mineral fertilizers, and herbicides. Biomass is used as fertilizer. The vineyards are surrounded by diverse greenery such as trees and shrubs where insects can live, breed, and feed. Additionally, there are numerous "insect hotels" in the vineyards. A small area (4 ha) of family-owned vineyards is cultivated. The organic vineyards are part of the dynamic landscape and are located on various plots around the village. The vineyards are planted with the white, indigenous varieties Zelen and Pinela. Additionally, there are Istrian Malvasia, Italian Riesling (Welschriesling), and the red varieties Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah. The level of mechanization is low – most of the work in the vineyards is done manually, as in the past. |
